Beef producers Andrew and Megan Miller dreamt of owning their own station, having both come from farming families, but the reality of owning their own property has always been just out of reach. They have created their own opportunities by working on properties across NSW and Queensland, and leasing land to run stock before advancing into a management position at Braidwood Station.
When they took over the 356,000 acre property near Jundah in South-West Queensland in early 2015, the station was almost completely de-stocked. With an ambitious goal of building a profitable herd from scratch, critical decisions about buying, selling and trading cattle needed to be made. Even though they were always focused on understanding the numbers, the transition from owning their own livestock business to managing someone else’s meant a higher level of responsibility and justification. The owner offered a profit-share arrangement, which only further inspired them to maximise beef profit margins.
The pair created complex spreadsheets to help them compare lots available for sale, decide when, where and how best to sell cattle for maximum returns, and justify financial decisions to the owner. The cattle tools they created boosted net proceeds on sales by thousands of dollars and prevented overspending on cattle purchases. However, despite the many clear financial benefits of the innovative tools, the spreadsheets were impractical in many ways as they weren’t accessible in the cattle yards or at sales when they needed them most.
After seeking input from a software developer and beef industry consultant, who both saw the potential these tools offered for boosting cattle profit margins, they worked to refine the suite of calculators. Together they created Herd XL; an easy-to-use niche cattle app tailored to the needs of Australian beef producers.
